Keep your hair up with this useful multi-tool!

I started making these as hair pins, but have learned that they are useful tool in sewing and ebroidery as well. They can double as a wooden awl (for enlarging holes), a stiletto (for holding fabric in place and pushing close to sewing machine feet), or a seam turner (for pushing out corners and pressing seams).

I finish these with a thin protective coat of polyurethane, followed by a beeswax and mineral oil rub, which leaves them feeling silky smooth.

Are you a crafter with specific needs? I love making one-of-a-kind craft tools for other makers! Message me with your custom request.

Flotsam is a one-person operation. I cut each small batch of kitchenware individually from carefully selected scrap wood, which I collect locally. Because I make everything by hand in small batches, each item will be unique and slightly different, and there will be some natural variation of hue and grain patterns in the wood.

I take pride in producing beautiful, well crafted items from salvaged wood. Much of my wood comes from other woodworking shops – scraps from large projects that would otherwise be discarded. I also use construction and demolition scraps, broken furniture and anything else made of good, solid hardwood that needs a second chance at life. After I source the wood, I must deconstruct it and/or bring each piece down to a manageable size, then I cut and shape each piece individually. The production process is a dance between the planer, table saw, bandsaw and an array of different sanding tools. For more info, visit my website!

This bead holder was dreamed up by my good friend and fellow creator, Grace DuVal. She liked the finished product enough to share it on her YouTube channel, so I’ve used her images to make this cusom listing in case others would like something similar. Feel free to message me with specific requests!

Roughly, these are the dimensions of the longer boxes pictured:
16″ long
3 ¾” wide
The inside of each row is about 1″ wide, 1″ deep, and 13″ long

If you would like something with similar wood hues, choose the “Cedar & Oak” variation. Or, choose a mystery combination and I’ll use whatever I have lying around, plus I’ll tell you the story of where I got the wood.

I will finish the box with protective polyurethane.

Feel free to message me if you’d like to tweak the design a bit. I’m interested in figuring out what it is that people will find most useful. Also, let me know if you have other beading or crafting needs, I love making things for people who make things!

If you haven’t seen Grace’s video, it’s about making money as an artist. And beading! Watch the video here.

The inside diameter of the hole is 1/2″
The tubes are just under 1/2″ in diameter and 3″ long
The tube pokes up above the wooden part of the vase about 1/4″

Each bud vase is treated with water-resistant polyurethane, sanded down to a smooth finish.

This wooden spatula design is my best seller at markets – it fits into your hand with ease, whether you’re a lefty or a righty. The angle creates a pointy end that’s great for scraping the corners of pots, and a rounded end that’s perfect for bowls. Use it to flip pancakes, ice cakes and mix stir-fries. A great all-around kitchen tool for a wide range of uses. Finished with pure tung oil and citrus, followed by a coat of beeswax and mineral oil.

This is my take on the American spurtle, based roughly on a custom request (my client called it her “batter beater” and said she used her old one for everything until it wore out). The sturdy blade measures just over 1″ wide, and is carved thinner than the rounded handle, giving the piece a lovely contour and a natural feel. Finished with pure tung oil and citrus, followed by a coat of beeswax and mineral oil.

Size options:
8″ long: meant for small hands and tight spaces!
10″ long: great for a range of cooking and baking
13″ long: for larger saucepans and pots
